The Hidden Workforce of the Cloud: How Data Centres Power Sustainable Growth Across the Nordics

Salboheds unites industry, government, and academia to explore the human and economic impact of digital infrastructure.

Salboheds extends a heartfelt thank you to everyone who made the launch of our new whitepaper — The Hidden Workforce of the Cloud — such a success.

Hosted at the iconic Steam Hotel in Västerås, the Whitepaper Launch Breakfast brought together leaders from across industry, government, academia, and the diplomatic community for a morning of dialogue and insight. The discussions focused on how data centres — the unseen backbone of the digital world — are driving sustainable growth, local skills, and community opportunity throughout Sweden and the Nordic region.

A Gathering of Nordic and International Leaders

The event, held on 31 October 2025, marked a significant milestone for the region’s data centre and digital infrastructure ecosystem. Among the distinguished speakers and panellists were:

  • Dennis Peters, CEO, Salboheds
  • H.E. Barbara Jones, Ambassador of Ireland to Sweden
  • Isabelle Kemlin, Vice Chair, Swedish Data Centre Industry (SDCI)
  • Sandra Karlsson, Public Policy Lead Nordics, AWS
  • Karin Angus, Global Lead Datacentres, Enterprise Ireland
  • Anna Starrin, Moderator

Also, recognition goes to Patrick Hamilton Walsh, Chief Innovation Officer at Salboheds, who led the research and publication of The Hidden Workforce of the Cloud. His work sheds light on the people, partnerships, and potential behind one of the world’s fastest-growing — yet often least understood — industries: data infrastructure.

Exploring the People Behind the Digital Economy

The whitepaper highlights that each hyperscale data centre can support between 2,000 and 15,000 jobs throughout its lifecycle — from initial groundwork and construction to ongoing operations, logistics, and local services.

Every direct job within a data centre can also generate up to seven additional roles in the surrounding economy, creating a powerful multiplier effect that supports regional prosperity, skills development, and innovation.

“Behind every data centre are thousands of skilled individuals — engineers, electricians, groundworkers, planners, and service professionals — who together make digital life possible. The Hidden Workforce of the Cloud is about recognising their contribution and ensuring that growth remains sustainable, inclusive, and locally rooted.”
Patrick Hamilton Walsh, Chief Innovation Officer, Salboheds

The Nordics: A Global Model for Sustainable Digital Infrastructure

The research identifies the Nordic region as a world leader in sustainable data infrastructure. With abundant clean energy, stable governance, and a highly skilled vocational workforce, the Nordics have become a preferred destination for hyperscale and enterprise data centre investment.

Salboheds’ work — spanning civil engineering, sustainable groundwork, and infrastructure development — places it at the heart of this transformation. By combining deep local expertise with international partnerships, Salboheds helps clients connect global ambition with local impact, ensuring that every project contributes to social, economic, and environmental progress.

Turning Sustainability Goals into Measurable Action

Sustainability is no longer a discussion point — it is a deliverable. The whitepaper underscores how data centre projects can integrate ESG accountability, local hiring, and community reinvestment into their frameworks.

Salboheds’ approach centres on responsible construction, transparent reporting, and collaborative innovation — helping hyperscalers, policymakers, and regional developers turn sustainability goals into measurable, human outcomes.

“We believe the digital transition must also be a human transition. The people who build and sustain our digital infrastructure are just as vital as the technology itself,” said Dennis Peters, CEO, Salboheds. “Our mission is to ensure every project leaves a positive legacy — economically, environmentally, and socially.”

Positive Reception and Forward Momentum

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many noted how rare and valuable it is to see cross-sector collaboration between the construction, technology, and policy communities in such a practical, forward-focused setting.

Discussions during the launch revealed a strong, shared vision for a human-centred, sustainable digital future — one where data centres drive opportunity, resilience, and inclusive growth across Europe.

Salboheds is proud to see Sweden and the Nordics recognised as leading voices in shaping this future and remains committed to deepening partnerships that align industry growth with societal good.
